🏃 Journal Jog Recap

The 54th running of the Journal Jog took place on Sunday. A sold-out field of runners, walkers, and stroller pushers took to the streets of Southwest Reno for an 8K on an unusually humid (by Northern Nevada standards) morning. Reno Running Company Races revived the event in 2023 after a 3-year hiatus. Similar to last year, the race started on Foster Drive in front of Reno High School, and finished on the Reno High track.

The number of total finishers have steadily climbed since the race has come back, and hopefully, in the next couple of years, it will return to the numbers Journal Jogs saw in the 1980s through early 2000s. Here’s a breakdown of finishers since 2023:

  • 2023: Runners/Walkers = 634; Strollers = 27; Total = 661

  • 2024: Runners/Walkers = 692; Strollers = 30; Total = 722

  • 2025: Runners/Walkers = 807; Strollers = 60; Total = 867

The Journal Jog is the only event in the area that has a separate competitive stroller division. The strollers take off five minutes before the rest of the field. Luis (Freddy) Barraza was this year’s stroller champion and it marked his third consecutive win. He averaged 5:48 pace. Kasey O’Hara was the top female. Congratulations to the top-3:

Stoller Male

  • 🥇 Freddy Barraza - 28:49

  • 🥈 Pedro Valles Cano - 30:48

  • 🥉 Jayson Welden - 32:07

Stroller Female

  • 🥇 Kasey O’Hara - 35:35

  • 🥈 Monica Torres - 41:00

  • 🥉 Kiley Stevens - 43:23

There were numerous past Journal Jog winners in the field on Sunday including 64-year-old Al Dehlinger. Although the course has changed, Dehlinger still owns the fastest 8K time for the Journal Jog (23:52) set in 1984. Other past champions who raced on Sunday include Scott Young, Lupe Cabada, Dominic Henriques, and Ramona Sanchez.

Despite multiple past champions racing, both male and female winners were first-time champions. Celime Garcia, a former University of Nevada runner and Douglas High graduate, was the overall champion in 26:03. Claire Nelson, also a former Wolf Pack runner, was the female winner in 29:14. Both champions were in a tight battle and narrowly defeated a past champion. Garcia finished 8-seconds ahead of 2024 champion Dominic Henriques; Nelson won by 9-seconds over seven-time Journal Jog winner, Ramona Sanchez.

Congratulations to the top-3:

Male

  • 🥇 Celime Garcia - 26:03

  • 🥈 Dominic Henriques - 26:11

  • 🥉 Billy Haug - 26:22

Female

  • 🥇 Claire Nelson - 29:14

  • 🥈 Ramona Sanchez - 29:23

  • 🥉 Lauren Evans - 32:33

Reno Running Company Races owner, Matt Balzer, said the plan for the 55th running of the Journal Jog is to take place the same weekend in 2026.
