🏊♂ 🚴♂ 🏃 Learn more about the Pyramid Lake Triathlon set for July 19.
⛰ 🏃♀ Silver State 50/50 and half marathon had 238 finishers despite very hot temperatures. Find out who earned a spot on the podium for each distance.
📆 We added several RenoTahoe races for August to our race calendar.
Pyramid Lake Triathlon is Set for July 19
The Pyramid Lake Triathlon, one of the oldest ongoing endurance races in our region, is set for July 19. The race has been been a tradition for 40+ years, and the Reno Area Triathletes have been organizing the event for the last 19 years. During this time, the Reno Area Triathletes have given all the proceeds back to the community, nearly $120,000 has been donated to local non-profits who volunteer at the race.

Over the years, the race has donated over $120,000 to non-profit groups that volunteer on race day
The triathlon is considered a “sprint” distance. Participants will swim a half mile, bike 14-miles, and finish with a 3-mile run. This is a great distance for those looking to participate in their first triathlon.
“Typically, a third of our participants have never done a triathlon before. This is a great race for beginners because of the distance. We also make sure we have plenty of volunteers on the water. Since the Reno Area Triathletes organize the race, we have all experienced a race before and can answer any questions and guide first-time athletes through to the finish line,” said Mike Ginsburg, president of the Reno Area Triathletes and race director for the Pyramid Lake Triathlon.
Although the field is largely made up of rookies it is still provides a challenge for seasoned racers and usually brings out the top triathletes in our region. Ginsburg said, “the course is challenging enough for even the most advanced athletes.”
The swim is a half-mile loop in Pyramid Lake with water temperatures that usually hover around 68-72 degrees on race day. Organizers recommend participants wear a wetsuit for the swim.
Participants getting ready to start the Pyramid Lake Triathlon
The 14-mile bike leg is on an undulating course with plenty of ups, downs, and flats. The entire bike course is on the road. While many of the experienced athletes will be on high-end triathlon or road bikes, many participants complete the course on lower end bikes and even mountain bikes.
The race finishes with an out and back 3-mile run on a mixture of paved and dirt road. The run starts with a 100-foot climb out of transition, but participants fly down the same hill to the finish line.
If you aren’t ready to tackle the entire race individually, you can do the Pyramid Lake Triathlon as a 2 or 3 person relay.
“The Pyramid Lake Triathlon is the only local Northern Nevada triathlon. It’s a great way for our local athletes to not have to travel to compete. For those traveling from out of town, Reno has many great hotels,” said Ginsburg.
The race would not be possible without the support of the Reno Area Triathletes. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. “The club is made up of racers of every ability from professional athletes to beginners,” said Ginsburg.
If you are interested in joining the Reno Area Triathletes, dues are only $20 per year and it has been the same price for 30 years. Ginsburg said, “With our memberships and sponsorships we usually give all the money back to members in the form of discounts to other races and get togethers. Plus, club members get a discount to the Pyramid Lake Triathlon.”
If you want to participate in Northern Nevada’s only triathlon, be sure to sign-up for this year’s Pyramid Lake Triathlon soon and register to become a member of the Reno Area Triathletes.
⛰ 🏃 Silver State 50/50 Results
Saturday was the 40th annual Silver State 50/50 and 17th annual trail half-marathon. This year’s race was pushed back three weeks from the traditional race date. Participants were challenged with warmer than normal conditions for the race with the temperature hovering around 90 degrees at the start and finish in Rancho San Rafael Park.

The start of the 50K at Saturday’s Silver State 50/50
Despite the heat, there were some very impressive results. Two course records were broken on Saturday. In the 50K, Jennifer Schmidt, from Auburn, CA, set a new record 4:29:39. This beat the previous record of 4:34:48 set in 2016 by Anna Mae Flynn. In the half-marathon, Truckee’s Helen Mino Faulkner ran a 1:37:41 which surpassed the previous record of 1:41:49 set in 2013 by Lauren Evans.
