Mikkeller Run Club Reno =🏃🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ + 🍻

Mikkeller Run Club Reno combines a casual 5K, post-run beverages, and a chance to socialize with fellow runners. The free running club just celebrated its 9th birthday, and they are continuing to grow and get people active in the RenoTahoe area.

Nick and Camille Malmquist first discovered the Mikkeller Run Club while they were living in Paris in 2015. “One night at a brewery event we overheard that there was a 5K run the next morning and runners got a free beer afterwards. That piqued Camille’s interest, because she had recently started running. It piqued my interest because of the free beer,” said Nick Malmquist, co-founder of the Mikkeller Run Club Reno Chapter.

The next morning, Nick and Camille showed up at L’Express de Lyon, a small craft beer bar, ran a 5K, and enjoyed a free beer with fellow runners. The event was part of the Mikkeller Run Club Paris, a satellite running club formed from the original Mikkeller Run Club (MRC) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In 2014, the Danish brewery Mikkeller Beers started MRC to combine the passion of running with the love of craft beer. In just over 10 years, MRC now has 200+ satellite run clubs all over the world.

“We ran with the Paris chapter for one great year and had such good fun and made good friends that we thought we would try to do the same in Reno,” said Nick.

When Nick and Camille moved back to Reno in 2016, they launched the Mikkeller Run Club Reno chapter. MRC Reno is a free group run that starts and finishes at a local bar, restaurant, or brewery. Participants run a casual 5K then spend time socializing with new and old friends while enjoying a tasty beverage.

Nick and Camille Malmquist, founders of MRC Reno, celebrated the groups 9th anniversary earlier this month.

Although the group started small, MRC Reno has seen solid growth throughout the years. “Unbeknownst to us at the time, the first running of MRC Reno took place during the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey so attendance was minimal. The first run had four people. As we expanded from one monthly run to adding Wednesday evenings runs and more Saturday runs, we consistently see 25+ runners at every event and approach 50 runners on Saturday mornings,” said Nick.

As attendance has grown and new friendships have formed, MRC Reno runners will often travel together to out of town races or to run with MRC chapters across the country. Recently, over a dozen MRC Reno members traveled to Denmark to participate in the Mikkeller Beer Celebration — a multi-day beer festival with running events associated. In addition, MRC Reno has adopted Chrissie Caughlin Park and fields several teams in the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey and Ragnar events.

“One of the best parts of the MRC Reno is the support we give and receive as we push each other to do our best,” said Nick.

MRC Reno member Jack Perkins chimed in, “MRC’s social runs provide a great break from solo training runs. It’s good to be part of a club that’s so welcoming to those new to running or new to the area.”

Although MRC’s roots are tied to Mikkeler Beer, the group doesn’t exclude those who do not drink. “Most of our runners enjoy a pint of nice craft beer after the run, but I can always find a good non-alcoholic beer or hop water,” said Perkins.

Mikkeller Run Club Reno is open to all runners regardless of ability level. During MRC Reno runs you will find serious ultra runners, those who consistently place on the podium at local races, people who run just a few times a month, and others who are just getting into the sport. The structure of MRC Reno is a “no-drop” run. Meaning the group makes frequent stops to allow the runners in the back to catch up before they get moving again.

Often times joining a new group can be intimidating, especially if you are new to running. Nick explained, “We would tell anyone who wanted to come to their first MRC Reno run that we are very open to new people and that they would probably not be the only first-time attendees at that specific run. The no-drop style allows any level of runner to make it through to the end. Afterwards, you are welcome to hang out with anyone there and very likely to meet people with a number of shared interests.”

Here is the current Mikkeller Run Club schedule:

  • 1st Wednesdays = 7:30 PM at Eclipse Pizza in Reno

  • 2nd Wednesdays = 6:00 PM at the Huntsman Tavern in Sparks

  • 3rd Wednesdays = 7:00 PM at Pinon Bottle Co. Midtown in Reno

“MRC Reno will continue into the future as long as people want to get together, go out for a little 5K run, and then enjoy a tasty beverage afterwards,” concluded Nick.
