Silver State 50/50 - An “Old School” Ultra Race

The annual Silver State 50/50 and half marathon is set for Saturday, June 7 and registration is open.

ActiveRenoTahoe asked race director and ultra running legend, John Trent, why runners should sign-up for the Silver State 50/50.

“Silver State takes a huge amount of pride in offering runners an experience that’s very much in the spirit of ‘old school’ ultra running,” said Trent.

This is the 40th year of the 50-miler and 50K and 17th year of the half-marathon. The race is put on by the Silver State Striders and starts and finishes in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. From the race website:

[Silver State] was literally founded in the backyard of one of our co-founders Roland Martin, as a way to bring the ultra communities of Northern Nevada and Northern California together for a great day of adventure on Peavine Mountain and the nearby Carson Range followed by food, drink, and ample storytelling of the day’s events.

Silver State 50/50 is known for great volunteers and fun, festive, and well organized aid stations that help runners have a positive experience on a challenging course. Trent emphasized the importance of this.

“We want every runner to know that they are our most important runner through incredible supportive volunteers who will do just about anything for you to have a great run, as well as well-stocked aid stations, a challenging course that is a window into the beauty of Northern Nevada in the springtime, as well as a finish line that we hope feels like your backyard when you have friends over,” said Trent.

You won’t want to miss this year’s Silver State 50/50. Be sure to sign up to race or help out as a volunteer. Click here to register.

Journal Jog and Rock Reno Now Open for Registration

This spring Reno Running Company Races put on the Leprechaun Race and the Biggest Little Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K. Both races sold out weeks ahead of time. RRC Races just opened up registration for two of their fall events:

The 54th Journal Jog is “Reno’s Oldest Footrace”. It is an 8K through the streets of Southwest Reno. Although the course has had slight variations over the years, it is a great Reno tradition and an awesome way to kick off your fall racing season. It’s also the only race in the area (that we are aware of) that offers a competitive stroller division. This year’s Journal Jog will take place Sunday, August 24. Click here to register.

The half-marathon at Rock Reno is the only point-to-point half marathon in town. Runners will start in South Reno at the Sportsdome and finish in downtown at Greater Nevada Field, home of the Reno Aces. Participants can also do the half-marathon as a 2-person relay and there is a 5K option that starts and finishes at Greater Nevada Field. The race will take place on Sunday, October 5. Click here to register.

Be sure to register soon, so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to race in these events.
